Bandits Kill 33 in Deadly Attack on Kebbi Community

 Suspected bandits launched a violent assault in Bui District in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State leaving at least 33 people dead. The incident, which happened on Wednesday, has left residents reeling and prompted an immediate security response from state authorities.

According to a statement from the Kebbi State Police Command, the attackers described as suspected Lakurawa militants entered the district with the apparent aim of rustling cattle. Preliminary investigations suggest the armed group crossed over from neighboring Gudu Local Government Area before descending on the area.

In response to the invasion, locals from several nearby settlements, including Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago, quickly mobilized to confront the intruders. What followed was a fierce confrontation that ended in heavy casualties on the side of the defending residents. The police confirmed that 33 individuals lost their lives during the clash.

The police spokesman, SP Bashir Usman, expressed profound regret over the devastating loss of life and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He emphasized that the command views the incident with utmost seriousness and has already taken steps to prevent further violence.

In the aftermath, security forces including the police, military, and other collaborating agencies have significantly bolstered their presence in the affected communities. Patrols have been intensified across Arewa LGA, with additional reinforcements deployed to restore calm and protect vulnerable villages from reprisals or follow-up attacks.

This latest violence highlights the persistent security challenges in parts of  North-West Nigeria, where armed groups often target rural areas for cattle rustling, resource control, or outright terror. The Lakurawa group, in particular, has been linked to several recent incidents in the region, blending traditional banditry with more organized militant tactics.

Residents and community leaders have long voiced concerns about the vulnerability of isolated villages to such raids, especially during periods of heightened activity like the current dry season when herders move more freely. The attack comes amid wide worries over the spread of insecurity, with similar incidents reported in neighboring states in recent months.

Kebbi authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. Officials are also urging anyone with credible information about the attackers or their movements to come forward, promising that tips will be handled with the necessary discretion and protection.

For the families who lost loved ones in Bui District, the pain is compounded by the destruction and fear that linger in the wake of the assault. Many survivors have been left to grapple with grief while facing uncertainty about their safety and livelihoods.
