Rep Urges Acting IG to Probe Attack on Obi’s Convoy

A federal lawmaker has called on the newly appointed acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to launch a thorough investigation into the recent attack on the convoy of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, describing the incident as a serious threat to democracy and public safety.

The appeal came amid growing outrage over Tuesday's violence in Benin City, Edo State, where armed assailants reportedly trailed and opened fire on Obi’s vehicle as he left an event at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat. The attack followed the formal reception of Olumide Akpata, the former Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo, into the ADC. Obi had been present alongside party leaders, including former APC National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, whose residence later became a target in what some described as a coordinated assault.

Eyewitness accounts and circulating videos showed bullet-riddled gates, shattered vehicle windshields, and damaged SUVs in the aftermath. No fatalities were reported among Obi’s group, though the incident left several vehicles vandalized and heightened fears of political intimidation ahead of future elections. Obi himself described the experience as part of a wide pattern of lawlessness he has encountered, expressing gratitude for public support while stressing that such acts endanger democratic participation.

The lawmaker emphasized that the assault appeared premeditated and could amount to an attempted assassination. He urged the acting IGP who assumed office on Wednesday after being decorated by President Bola Tinubu to treat the matter with urgency, ensure a transparent probe, and bring those responsible to justice. The call reflects wider concerns that political violence is escalating in parts of the country, potentially stifling opposition voices and undermining free expression.

Security operatives from the Edo State Police Command have confirmed they are investigating the incident, with initial statements indicating that hoodlums were involved. However, details on arrests or suspects remain limited so far. The Obidient Movement, a key support base for Obi, has separately petitioned the police leadership demanding a full inquiry and measures to protect political figures.

Peter Obi has maintained that such attacks are not unfamiliar to him, pointing to recurring challenges in Nigeria’s political landscape. In statements following the event, he highlighted the need for stronger security coordination to safeguard citizens’ rights to move freely and engage in political activities without fear. Supporters and observers have echoed this sentiment, calling for authorities to address root causes like impunity and political thuggery that continue to plague events and gatherings.

The timing of the incident coincides with Tunji Disu’s first days in office as acting IGP, following the tenure of Kayode Egbetokun. Disu has publicly committed to intelligence-driven policing and zero tolerance for corruption and impunity, promises that many now hope will extend to handling high-profile cases like this one swiftly and impartially.

As the investigation unfolds, political analysts warn that unresolved incidents of this nature could further polarize the environment ahead of 2027 polls. Community leaders in Edo have appealed for calm while urging all parties to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric that might exacerbate tensions.

For the moment, Obi remains safe, and the focus stays on ensuring accountability. Travelers and political actors in the region have been advised to exercise caution.
