Four Mourners Die, Nine Others Injured in Tragic Multiple-Vehicle Crash in Anambra
A multiple-vehicle accident claimed the lives of four women and left nine other people with varying degrees of injuries. The victims were among a group returning from a burial ceremony, turning what should have been a somber but safe journey home into a scene of devastation near Agulu Lake.
The incident occurred around 6:18 pm on February 27, 2026, involving four vehicles: a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number HAL676YG, a shuttle bus bearing UKP274YA, a trailer, and a Toyota Hilux without visible registration plates. A total of 19 people were involved in the collision six adult males, 10 adult females, and three male children.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash resulted in the immediate deaths of four adult women. Nine others sustained injuries: two adult males, four adult females, and three male children. The injured were promptly rescued and rushed to nearby medical facilities, including St. Joseph's Hospital in Adazi, for treatment. FRSC officials noted that the victims included people who had attended a funeral and were heading back when the accident happened.
The Anambra State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mrs. Joyce Alexander-Asekhauno, confirmed the details in a statement released shortly after the incident. She explained that preliminary investigations pointed to excessive speeding and loss of control as the primary causes. "The drivers of the vehicles involved reportedly fled the scene, leaving no immediate eyewitness accounts from them," she said. Rescue operations were swift, with FRSC personnel, local vigilantes, and good Samaritans working together to free trapped passengers and provide first aid.
Road accidents like this are unfortunately all too common on many Nigerian highways, often exacerbated by poor road conditions in some areas, reckless driving, and overloading of vehicles. In this case, the stretch near Agulu Lake has been flagged in the past for its challenging terrain, especially during evening hours when visibility can drop. Community leaders in the area have long called for improved signage, speed bumps, and better enforcement of traffic rules to prevent such heartbreaking losses.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with the vehicles mangled and debris scattered across the road. Sympathizers gathered quickly, expressing shock and sorrow as news spread through the local communities. For the families of those who perished, the pain is compounded by the fact that these women had set out to pay their last respects to a departed loved one, only to meet their own untimely ends.
The FRSC has since cleared the road and urged all road users to exercise caution, particularly when traveling in groups or after attending events. Authorities reminded drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid distractions, and ensure vehicles are in good mechanical condition. Investigations are ongoing to determine more precise contributing factors, and officials have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
