The Akire of Ikire, Oba Olatunde Falabi, Passes Away at 91


The ancient town of Ikire in Osun State is in mourning following the passing of its revered traditional ruler, the Akire of Ikire, Oba Olatunde Falabi (Lambeloye III). The monarch, who had held the throne for over three decades, died at the age of 91.

Oba Falabi passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, after a brief illness, according to sources close to the palace. His son, Prince (Pharm.) Olugbenga Falabi the immediate past national secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) confirmed the news to some media outlets. The monarch had celebrated his 91st birthday just weeks earlier in January.

The Chairperson of Irewole Local Government Area, Dr. Esther Okunola, formally announced the monarch's death in a statement released in Osogbo on Monday. She described Oba Falabi as a pillar of wisdom, peace, and progress whose leadership brought stability and development to Ikire and its people. The local government expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the royal family, the people of Ikire, and the entire Osun State.

Born on January 20, 1935, into the Lambeloye ruling house, Oba Falabi's journey to the throne was marked by a distinguished career in pharmacy. A trained pharmacist, he combined his professional expertise with a deep commitment to community service and faith he was also an ordained pastor. He ascended the throne on May 8, 1993, and went on to reign for nearly 33 years, earning respect as a transformative leader who bridged tradition with modern progress.

During his long tenure, Oba Falabi was known for promoting peace, cultural preservation, and community development in Ikire, an ancient Yoruba town famous for its rich heritage and as a major producer of the popular local delicacy, ikire agbado (beans cake). His approachable style and dedication to his people's welfare made him a beloved figure not only in Osun State but beyond. Tributes have poured in from various quarters, with some noting that streets have been named in his honor in places like Ojodu, Ikeja, in recognition of his contributions.

The news of his passing has sent shock waves through the traditional institution in Osun and among professional bodies like the PSN, where his legacy as a royal pharmacist continues to inspire. Many have described him as a father figure whose counsel was sought on matters of tradition, health, and governance.

As the community prepares for funeral rites and the transition process in line with Yoruba customs and the traditions of Ikire kingdom, residents and admirers are reflecting on the monarch's enduring impact. His reign exemplified how traditional leadership can adapt to contemporary times while upholding core values of integrity, service, and unity.

Oba Olatunde Falabi is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a host of relatives, as well as the many lives he touched across generations. The people of Ikire and Osun State have lost a true custodian of culture and a beacon of wise leadership.
