Two suspected highway robbers arrested in Osun
The Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, has arrested two suspected highway robbers along the Ilesa–Ibadan Expressway in a swift operation that underscores ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities on major highways in the state.
The suspects, identified as 29-year-old Chima Eze and 41-year-old Sunday Okorie, both natives of Ebonyi State and residents of Mowe in Ogun State, were apprehended on Saturday, March 8, 2026, around 11:35 p.m. during a routine patrol by Amotekun operatives.
According to reports from the corps, the duo was allegedly attempting to rob a commercial vehicle loaded with goods from Ibadan when they were intercepted. The timely intervention prevented the robbery, and the suspects were taken into custody without further incident.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the arrested men confessed to being part of a four-man robbery gang that had been carrying out operations along the expressway in recent times. The other two members of the group managed to escape into the bush and remain at large, prompting Amotekun to intensify searches and surveillance in the area.
The Ilesa–Ibadan Expressway has long been a hotspot for highway robberies, with criminals often targeting commercial buses, goods-laden trucks, and private vehicles, especially at night. Such incidents have raised serious concerns among commuters and traders who rely on the route for interstate transportation and business activities.
Amotekun's proactive patrols and quick response have been credited with disrupting several planned attacks in recent months. The corps has emphasized that its operatives remain committed to ensuring safer travel corridors, working in collaboration with other security agencies where necessary.
The suspects have been handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution. Officials have assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing accomplices and dismantle the gang's operations entirely.
This latest arrest comes amid wider security initiatives in Osun State aimed at addressing highway crimes, which have sometimes involved armed groups ambushing motorists. Residents and road users have welcomed the development, viewing it as a positive step toward restoring confidence on the busy expressway.
The Osun Amotekun Corps, through its spokesperson, has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities along highways promptly. They have also encouraged drivers to avoid traveling alone at odd hours and to cooperate with security personnel during checks.
